XRAY.FM is celebrating more than 7 years on the FM airwaves and continued growth of the XRAY.FM community. This spring, the XRAY community showed up in a big way for the Fund Drive bringing the most individual donors the station has seen in a single cycle thanks in no small part to the efforts of the staff. Riding on this success, XRAY’s Board of Directors voted to reinvest in the foundations of the station – raising wages for full- and part-time staff members, offering benefits, and improving the signal reach to strengthen the longevity of this beloved community owned-and-operated radio platform.
Energized by the support of the community, the Board of Directors and search committee set out to hire a new permanent Executive Director (ED) this summer. “During the ED search, we gained new important insights from in-depth discussions with members of the XRAY family and partners in our community. These insights drove us to pivot from hiring a new ED to investing in and further supporting our staff and our infrastructure,” says Board President, Holly Hinson. “We are increasing wages across all staff, bringing the entry wage from $15/hr to $18/hr. For the first time in its history, XRAY will offer health care reimbursement for all staff assigned at 0.5 FTE or more.” On July 7th XRAY announced a new full-time staff position for a Community Manager to further support and engage with DJs, volunteers, and the community at large.
With renewed support from the XRAY Board of Directors, this new structure democratizes leadership across a staff management team. This innovative model of shared decision making will be bolstered by board oversight. The Board believes this investment will allow the station to evolve in ways that are sustainable and scalable for the future. XRAY is poised for a vibrant future of holding the microphone up to the best and most distinctive of Portland.
